Cultivating Youth Resilience, Empathy, and Responsibility

StarsStars

In modern-day Willis, Texas, John and Suzonne Lawrence set out to build more than a collection of animals—they cultivated a way of life rooted in responsibility, hard work, and connection to the land where their children were raised. What began with a single lamb gradually grew into a working barn that became home to two donkeys, two goats, eight chickens, and an immeasurable amount of love. The care of these animals became an all-encompassing passion project that their family strives to carry forward in Suzonne's absence.

Working outdoors and caring for animals played a pivotal role in shaping the younger generation of the Lawrence family. They learned firsthand the discipline, patience, and accountability required to nurture another living being. These experiences fostered resilience, empathy, and a strong work ethic—qualities that extend beyond agriculture and into every aspect of life.

Inspired by these formative experiences, The Grass Menagerie was created to offer similar opportunities for growth and character development to the broader community.
